Graham Hughes

Graham R.V. Hughes, MD FRCP, is presently Head of the Lupus Unit and consultant rheumatologist, The Rayne Institute, St. Thomas’ Hospital, London, UK.

Graham Robert Vivian Hughes qualified at the London Hospital in 1964 and subsequently worked for some years in London. From1969 he spent two years in New York at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, where he was part of the team which introduced anti-DNA assays for the diagnosis and management of systemic lupus erythomatosus.

Hughes returned to London in 1970 and in 1971 succeeded Professor Eric George Lapthorne Bywaters (1910−2003) as Head of Rheumatology at the Hammersmith Hospital and became Reader in Medicin. That year he set up Britain’s first dedicated lupus clinic, at The Hammersmith Hospital. In 1985 Hughes moved to St Thomas’ Hospital where, in the Rayne Institute, he set up the Lupus Arthritis Research Unit. The following year The Lupus pregnancy clinic was established in collaboration with colleagues in obstetrics – the first such clinic in the world.

1978, with Cheryl Marcus, a lupus patient, he set up the U.K. national patients’ association, now named Lupus UK. Dr Hughes is now Life President of Lupus UK.

In 1989 Dr Hughes was elected to the American Lupus “Hall of Fame” – the first non-American to be so honoured. In 1992 he was made Life President of Lupus UK In 1993 Hughes was awarded the International ILAR Rheumatology Research Prize, awarded once every 4 years for research into rheumatic diseases. The prize, awarded for the first time to a UK recipient, was for his work on the clotting mechanisms associated with antiphospholipid antibodies. He is editor of the journal “LUPUS” and on the editorial board of 23 journals.
In 1997 Dr Hughes set up the first dedicated lupus outpatient facility outside the U.S.A., the “Louise Coote Lupus Unit” based within St Thomas’ Hospital. The clinic is named for a young patient who died from the disease.

Hughes has published over 900 research papers in peer reviewed journals, dealing with all aspects of rheumatology but, in particular, with the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of lupus and related conditions.
